Father who inflicted wounds on 3-year-old son jailed 24 months
Mr Ebenezer Osei Bonsu, the father who inflicted deep wounds on his 3-year-old son, has been jailed for 24 months by a Kumasi Circuit Court on Tuesday, 9 June 2020.
The court further directed Mr Bonsu to sign a mandatory bond to be of good behaviour for four years.
The 25-year-old national service personnel was arrested after mercilessly shredding his son’s back with a wire and belt for spoiling his ‘yam’ phone, wetting his bed and being stubborn.
The incident happened on Sunday, 10 May 2020 at Buokrom in Kumasi.
He was arrested by the police in the Ashanti region and charged with assault and causing harm.
The little boy was admitted to a health facility in Kumasi and given health care.
The accused person pleaded guilty to the charge even though he denied the offence during his first appearance in court on May 14.
Meanwhile, counsel for the accused, Mr Samuel Kodua Amofa, who had earlier apologised to the stakeholders involved in the matter, expressed appreciation to the court for dealing leniently with his client.
“We can only be grateful because the facts were against us, so, we were only praying that the judge will have pity on us and also take into consideration the fact that we still need to cater for the child”.
“So, we’re grateful to the court for supposedly dealing leniently with us. We would have wanted that he be cautioned and bonded to be of good behaviour, but you know the repercussions for causing harm, so, if the lady judge has dealt leniently with us like this, we’ll only be grateful to God that he answered our prayers,” he told Class News’ Maxwell Attah.
He further noted that his client is remorseful as demonstrated to the court.
“We only pray for the days to run faster for him to come out, for the world to know that he is, indeed, reformed.”
