Fire razes EC’s office
Fire has gutted the office of the Electoral Commission (EC) in the Greater Accra Region at Sapeiman near Amasaman in Accra.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, 14 August 2020.
Tanks were brought in from Kotoku, Abelemkpe, Nsawam and Amasaman to quench the fire, a statement by the Ghana Police Service indicated.
The affected offices include a room filled with used electoral materials.
While no casualties were recorded, the cause of the fire is unknown.
The statement added that: “The Greater Accra Regional Director of the Commission, Mr. Kwame Amoah, informed the Regional Police Commander DCOP Mr. Afful Boakye Yiadom, who was at the scene, that the fire will not affect the recent registration and the upcoming December 2020 elections.”
The EC recently completed the compilation of the new voter roll for the December polls.
The total number of people captured onto the new voter roll is 16,932,492.
The EC says the exercise, which ended on Sunday, 9 August 2020, was successful, as it was “inclusive, participatory, orderly and peaceful.”
