Fishing: Closed season over; sea reopened
The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MoFAD) has lifted the month-long ban on fishing in the country.
The ceremonial opening of the sea after the closed season took place at Akplabanya Landing Beach in the Ada West District.
The fisheries ministry said the 2024 closed fishing season has been a crucial period of rest for the country’s marine ecosystems, allowing fish stocks to recover and grow.
This initiative, supported by the USAID Feed the Future Ghana Fisheries Recovery Activity and the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, is part of continued efforts to sustainably manage the country’s fisheries resources.
The ministry said the success of this year's closed season is a testament to the dedication and cooperation of all stakeholders, including the hardworking fisherfolk, traditional leaders, and security services.
They commended all for their unwavering support and commitment to preserving the marine resources for future generations.
Fishing officially resumed on 1 August.
