From lens to leadership: How Ghanaian photojournalist Pious Ali shaped U.S. politics
Trailblazing Ghanaian photojournalist Pious Ali has shared his remarkable journey in the United States, charting his rise from a passionate community organizer to a dynamic political force in Portland, Maine, and beyond.
In an exclusive interview with Classfmonline.com, Mr. Ali recounted how his unwavering commitment to community building, education, and leadership development in Portland paved the way for his entry into U.S. politics after moving abroad in search of new opportunities.
Pious Ali made history in 2013 as the first Ghanaian elected to public office in the United States when he joined Portland’s Board of Education.
He also broke barriers as the first African and Muslim to achieve such a milestone in Maine.
"My election to the school board was a turning point. It gave me the platform to help shape the education system in my community," he reflected.
Building on this success, Ali’s political trajectory soared in 2016 when he secured a seat on Portland’s City Council.
His steadfast dedication to public service earned him the role of Mayor Pro Tempore (Standby Mayor), a position where he steps in to ensure continuity in governance when required.
"Being Mayor Pro Tempore means stepping in to lead when necessary and ensuring that leadership remains steady," he explained.
In 2023, Mr. Ali aimed even higher by running for Mayor.
Although he did not win, his impact and contributions to Portland’s leadership and administration remain profound.
Pious Ali’s inspiring story underscores the growing influence of Ghanaians and Africans in diaspora politics. His unwavering dedication to leadership, education, and community development continues to motivate others to create lasting change in their adopted communities abroad
