GFL urges humane approach to Tema demolition exercise
The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has called on local authorities in Tema to handle the ongoing demolition exercise with greater compassion and fairness to prevent public resentment and social unrest.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s show on Saturday, November 8, Mr. Koomson acknowledged that while some structures may have been illegally erected, the manner in which the demolitions are being executed could have serious social and political repercussions.
He cautioned that Members of Parliament (MPs) representing constituencies in the area should pay close attention to the issue, warning that a heavy-handed approach could erode public trust and political support.
“Even though it is unlawful for people to put kiosks or structures at unauthorised places, the authorities must also be fair,” he said.
“Those who issued the permits or looked on while the structures were being built should also be held accountable — not just the ordinary people.”
Mr. Koomson urged city officials to engage affected residents in dialogue and adopt a more humane, transparent process that balances law enforcement with empathy.
He stressed that demolition exercises, if not handled with dignity and fairness, risk deepening hardship and fueling public discontent, especially in communities already facing economic challenges.
