Ghana initiate talks to reclaim Kwame Nkrumah’s former residence in Guinea
The Government of Ghana has begun negotiations with the family of Guinea’s late President Sékou Touré to take possession of the house where Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah lived and worked as Co-President of Guinea in his final years.
The initiative, undertaken on the instructions of President John Dramani Mahama, aims to renovate and preserve Nkrumah’s Guinea residence as both a tribute to the nation’s first president and a key historical site for tourism.
Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa, said the project will allow visitors to trace Nkrumah’s remarkable journey from Ghana to Guinea, providing a more immersive understanding of his life and legacy.
The discussions were advanced during a visit on Saturday led by Vice President H.E. Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who toured the property alongside the Sékou Touré family following the investiture of Guinea’s President, Mamady Doumbouya.
The Ghanaian delegation was warmly received by three generations of the Touré family, headed by the eldest son of the late leader.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently negotiating the terms of acquisition and consulting preservation experts to guide the restoration process.
Government officials have assured the public that the project will be handled with transparency and that updates will be provided at every stage of the undertaking.
