Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has said teachers deserve to be held in the highest esteem.

According to him, education is key to development and prosperity for individuals, adding that nations and teachers hold the key to actualising this vision.

“There can be no science, technology, innovation and even politicians without the teacher,” he said.

Speaking at the sixth quadrennial (53rd) national delegates conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in Kumasi on 3 January 2022, Otumfuo underscored the need for recognition and respect for teachers.

He indicated that by their tutelage, teachers had shaped individuals into transforming their communities and nations.

For his part, the President of the Presbyterian University College, Rev Prof Emmanuel Adow Obeng, expressed worry that some teachers dabble in politics, which, he said affects their demands depending on which government was in power.

He called on teacher unions to find a better negotiating approach for their demands as any time there is a standoff between the unions and the government, it is innocent students and the citizenry that suffer.

He called on the teacher unions to adopt knowledge-based negotiations rather than strike.
