Hundreds of girls within the Akuapem South enclave of the Eastern Region have participated in this month's outreach programme aimed at defining gender roles, which, in turn, may allow girls to understand why they need to pursue their desired goals irrespective of the challenges they face as females.

The monthly project, which has been in existence for years, is the brainchild of The Girl Excellent Movement (GEM).

The event brought together a constellation of female rights activists, which included media practitioners, entrepreneurs and politicians who demonstrated innovative ways of empowering girls through education, literacy, technology and other training opportunities to equip them to be better decision-makers.

The female professionals also took turns to espouse their views on building confidence, managing peer influence, venturing into entrepreneurship and other relevant areas bordering on the use of social media.

Miss Janice Osei Agyemang, a broadcast journalist with the Class Media Group (CMG), who also advocates the protection of the rights of female journalists in Ghana, shared her knowledge and experience on the use of social media as a positive change tool to elevate females.

Renowned entrepreneur Sandra Oswald also shared her insightful entrepreneurial journeys about how she began to produce shoes for presidents and other leaders as an SHS leaver and, thus, used the occasion to encourage the participants to find genuine, positive avenues to survive and navigate through life even if there is no chance for higher education.

Other Speakers and mentors included Dr Efua Yorke, who urged the participants to take science and math seriously.

At the same event, feminists Felicity Nelson and Samira Mohammed Lardi mentored the girls on managing peer influence.

This year's outreach was on the theme: “Inspiration on wheels”.
