Karaga chieftaincy imbroglio: One killed, 12 bullet-injured in army-civilian clash
A fatal clash between residents and the military in the Karaga District of the Northern Region has resulted in one reported death.
The victim, a young girl, succumbed to bullet injuries, while two others sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at the same facility.
Tensions erupted in the town of Karaga on Monday morning, with reports of gunshots being fired.
Witnesses recounted that men in military fatigues arrived in four armoured tanks and four police pickup trucks, allegedly to arrest the Regent of Karaga, Adam Sumani, at the old Karaga Palace.
However, the residents mobilised to resist the arrest, leading to a chaotic confrontation.
During the altercation, gunshots were fired for nearly 45 minutes, resulting in injuries to 12 people.
Three of the wounded were transferred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where one passed away.
Additionally, reports indicate that the military personnel conducted a house-to-house search lasting for about two hours.
Tensions have simmered in Karaga over the past two years, marked by sporadic outbreaks of violence.
The conflict stems from disputes surrounding the chieftaincy, specifically the enskinment of Abdulai Nantogma as Chief of Karaga by the overlord of Dagbon, Ya Na Abukari II.
However, resistance from some quarters in Karaga led to the enskinment of Mahama Sumani as Kar-Naa.
The recent passing of Mahama Sumani on March 12, 2024, and the subsequent assumption of his son Adam Sumani as the regent of Karaga, have reignited tensions in the area, culminating in the recent disturbances.
