Mahama mourns Appiatse explosion deaths
Former President John Dramani Mahama has sent his condolences to the families of the victims of the Appiatse explosion in the Bogoso District of the Western Region.
The accident killed at least 17 people and injured 59 others.
In a message on Facebook, Mr Mahama said: "A truly sad day for Ghana!"
"My deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the unfortunate disaster at Appiatse, in the Bogoso District of the Western Region this afternoon".
"Let’s pray for the speedy recovery of the injured, as we also urge the security and emergency services to continue to work assiduously to alleviate the damage and suffering in the affected communities".
"To the chiefs and people in the affected areas, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the country stand with you, in this time of grief".”
The explosion occurred when a motorcycle collided with a vehicle carrying explosives to a mining site on Thursday, 20 January 2022.
Apart from the deaths and injuries, the explosion destroyed several domestic and commercial properties.
Residents of the area had to run for their lives.
The police, fire service, NADMO and other agencies are on the ground to help with rescue efforts.
