Massive three-day cleanup of Accra, Kumasi from Friday
From Friday, April 3 to Sunday, April 5, the Sanitation and Water Resources Ministry will undertake a “massive clean-up exercise” in Accra and Kumasi, the two cities that have been locked down by the President for two weeks, as part of measures to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus, which has, so far, killed five out of the one hundred ninety-five infected people in Ghana with three recoveries.
The exercise will be a collaborative effort among the ministry, the respective assemblies, the Environmental Service Providers Association and private waste management firm Zoomlion Ghana Limited.
In a statement, the ministry said: “The exercise is to utilise the lockdown period to ensure effective cleaning and cleansing of the cities in support of the fight against the spread of the coronavirus disease”.
Already hundreds of markets in the two cities have been disinfected.
The ministry urged the residents in the two cities to keep their homes and immediate surroundings clean at all times and refrain from indiscriminate littering and disposal of refuse.
The ministry also urged sanitation service providers to ensure regular collection and disposal of waste from homes within their concessional areas.
