The Minority Spokesperson on Education, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, has kicked against the government’s plans to introduce a fresh law to govern all public universities in the country.

According to Mr Nortsu-Kotoe, the move by the government is to control public universities which will result in chaos on university campuses.

Speaking to Class News, the Member of Parliament for Akatsi North called on university lecturers and other stakeholders to oppose the move by the government.

The proposed law will seek to change the structure of the governing councils of the public universities with the majority of the council members being appointed by the President.

This will be a deviation from the norm where the university’s members are normally the majority.

Admission of students into the public universities will also be altered with the introduction of a centralised system.

Speaking with journalists in parliament on Monday, 8 April 2019, Mr Nortsu-Kotoe pointed out that the new governance structure “would compromise academic freedom.”

He added that the new reforms would “not augur well for academic activity” in the country’s tertiary institutions hence the Minority will oppose the new law.
