No armoured bullion vans by end of June, no police escorts – IGP to banks

General News
IGP - James Oppong-Boanuh

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr James Oppong-Boanuh, has reminded the Association of Bankers to provide fortified armoured vehicles for carting currencies by the close of June 2021 or he withdraws his officers from providing protection for currencies in transit.

The reminder comes after a police officer escorting a bullion van was shot dead by armed robbers at Adedenkpo, a suburb of James Town in Accra on Monday, 14 June 2021.

The IGP has directed the Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department to take over investigations into the attack.

Preliminary investigations show that unidentified gunmen on a number of motorbikes, crossed the bullion van, which was on a pay/collection errand, and shot the police officer who was guarding it, killing him instantly.

The armed men also fired sporadically into the air.

The driver of the van sustained gunshot wounds but is responding to treatment.

However, a hawker was also killed by the armed men when one of the two tellers on the bullion van, run in the direction of the street sellers to escape the attack.

The two Mon-tran tellers escaped unhurt but were sent to the hospital to be treated for trauma.

The police has commenced investigations into the attack to bring the perpetrators to book.
