Pollution threatens Atronsu River – Environment Report urges EPA, GWRC to take action
Environment Report has drawn attention to alarming concerns regarding the pollution of the Atronsu River in the Western North Region by the Ghana Bauxite Company (GBC).
The Environment Report underscores the pivotal role of the river in sustaining the livelihoods of over 10,000 residents in communities like Ampekrom, Gyapongkrom, and Atronsu, including the GBC staff quarters, by providing clean drinking water for generations.
A two-day fact-finding trip conducted by Environment Report has unveiled the looming danger facing this vital water source. It has been observed that the continuous activities of the Ghana Bauxite Company in the region pose a significant risk to the future availability of clean water. Despite GBC's announced intent to expand operations to the Atronsu Hills, residents express dissatisfaction with the apparent lack of effective engagement from GBC management regarding this project, which threatens their very livelihoods.
Environment Report is urgently calling upon the Environmental Protection Agency and the Ghana Water Resources Commission to launch immediate investigations into the matter.
Additionally, it urged these authorities to summon the management of the Ghana Bauxite Company to ensure stringent measures are implemented to protect the Atronsu River and safeguard the well-being of the communities relying on its pristine waters.
