President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged the Ghana Police Service to reassess and enhance its protocols to prevent and address post-electoral violence.

This comes in the wake of incidents following the 2024 general elections, where there were reports of vandalism and the destruction of public property, as well as the damage to materials and offices of the Electoral Commission (EC), allegedly caused by supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking at the launch of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s (PCG) Bicentennial Anniversary on Sunday, 22 December 2024, at the Osu Castle, President Akufo-Addo expressed deep concern over the lingering post-election violence and called for a more effective response to such events in the future.

“I commend the security services, particularly the police, for their effective monitoring of the elections, which ensured a peaceful process. However, I would urge the leadership of the police to review their practices to ensure that post-electoral violence does not persist for too long before being brought under control,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

He reiterated the importance of maintaining peace and order in order to protect Ghana’s democratic integrity and national stability.

“As a nation, we must be resolute in our commitment to safeguarding peace, stability, and the democratic values we have worked so hard to establish,” the President emphasised, urging all Ghanaians to unite in preserving the country’s peace.
