Despite the Social Security and Insurance Trust (SSNIT) deciding to terminate the sale of its 60 percent shares in four hotels to Rock City, a company owned by the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Organised Labour is adamant on calling off its strike. 

On Friday, July 12, 2024, labour unions held an emergency meeting and announced a nationwide strike to demand the cessation of the deal between SSNIT and Rock City. The Labour Unions are set to meet today, July 15, 2024, to decide on their next steps following SSNIT's decision to halt the sale of the shares to the Minister’s company.

In an interview on Accra 100.5 FM’s 6:00 AM news on Monday, July 15, 2024, Mr. Thomas Musah, the General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), explained that despite the termination of the contract with Rock City, the strike action continues till a decision is taken at today’s meeting. 

He noted that the outcome of today's meeting will determine Organised Labour’s next course of action regarding their nationwide strike.

Mr. Musah stated that a decision will be made after the meeting, which is scheduled for 10:00 AM, and a press conference will be held to announce the way forward.

He expressed concern about the developments at SSNIT, particularly regarding the management of workers' pensions.

He questioned SSNIT’s mode of paying workers' pensions, highlighting that Tier Two and Three pensions are paying larger lump sums to the same contributors. 

He argued that if SSNIT is incurring losses from the hotels, the managers should be fired. 

He pointed out that other hotels, such as Movenpick and Kempinski, are making profits.
