Sweeping Trump tariffs: Ablakwa summons US Ambassador
The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has confirmed that he has invited the United States Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Virginia Palmer, to his office for discussions on the recent imposition of a 10% tariff on Ghana by the US government.
According to the Minister, the meeting is scheduled to take place on Monday morning.
The purpose of the invitation is to seek clarification and understand the reasons behind the decision made by former US President Donald Trump to impose the tariff.
The Minister made this remark in a statement posted on his Facebook wall dated April 4, 2024
The move comes in the wake of concerns over the potential impact of the tariff on Ghana’s trade relations with the United States.
Minister Ablakwa noted that the government is committed to protecting Ghana's economic interests and will seek to engage diplomatically to resolve the matter.
Details of the meeting are expected to be made public following the discussion between the Minister and Ambassador Palmer.
