Volta Regional Minister inspects Weta Irrigation Dam ahead of planned rehabilitation
The Volta Regional Minister, Mr James Gunu, last week visited the Weta Irrigation Dam, also known as the Dekpor Dam, to assess the challenges facing the facility and explore plans for its restoration.
The dam, one of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s landmark legacy projects, remains a critical infrastructure for agricultural productivity in the Volta Region.
Despite its historical significance, years of neglect have left the facility in a state of disrepair.
Speaking during the visit, officials noted that President John Dramani Mahama, through the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, has approved a comprehensive rehabilitation plan aimed at restoring the dam, strengthening irrigation farming, and improving livelihoods for surrounding communities.
Plans are also underway to attract private investors to develop the fish ponds constructed along the dam for commercial fish production, providing additional income-generating opportunities for local residents.
The rehabilitation project is scheduled to commence this year, marking a significant step toward reviving the dam as a strategic national asset.
Community members and Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Edem Agbana, expressed gratitude to Mr Gunu, the Minister for Agriculture, and President Mahama for the intervention, describing it as a timely and visionary effort to enhance food security and economic development in the region.
