A galamsey pit has caved in on ten persons at Prestea Huni Valley in the Western Region, leading to their death

A galamsey pit has caved in on 14 persons at Prestea Huni Valley in the Western Region, killing 10.

The 10 deceased and four survivors were engaged in mining at an illegal site when the incident occurred on Thursday, 26 November 2021.

Confirming the accident to the media, the Prestea Huni Valley National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Coordinator, Mr Francis Abeiku Yankah indicated that the pit where the 10 persons died was not registered.

He stated: “It is far away from where the municipal town assembly is”.

“The residents of the community began the rescue and were joined subsequently by the police, NADMO and BNI officials.”

“It was an illegal mine, not registered, we had earlier warned them to stop them from mining”.

“But they returned to the site three or two months later, so they went underground to mine when the incident occurred.”

The four survivors who sustained injuries are currently receiving treatment at the Prestea-Huni Valley Hospital.
