Witchcraft Accusation Bill passed by Parliament
Parliament has passed the Criminal Offences Amendment Bill 2022, commonly referred to as the Witchcraft Accusation Bill.
The bill, sponsored by MP for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, aims to address the issue of witchcraft accusations and their consequences.
The bill does not intend to outlaw the belief in witchcraft itself but rather seeks to criminalise the act of falsely accusing individuals of being witches and subjecting them to associated punishments.
Several other cosponsors of the bill emphasised that its purpose is to protect innocent individuals from baseless witchcraft accusations and the harm caused by such allegations.
In response to the successful passage of the Witchcraft Accusation Bill, Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the sponsors for their diligent efforts in crafting and promoting this important legislation.
The bill's approval marks a significant step towards ensuring justice and safeguarding the rights of individuals in cases of witchcraft accusations.
