COVID-19: CJ goes into self-isolation for 14 days

Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah has gone into self-isolation for 14 days.
This was disclosed in a statement issued and signed by Judicial Secretary Cynthia Pamela Addo.
According to the statement, Justice Anin Yeboah, on the “advice of his doctors, embarked on a 14-day self-isolation in compliance with COVID-19 protocols” effective Monday, 6 July 2020.
It added: “During this period, His Lordship will be working from the Chief Justice’s Official Residence at the Cantonments, Accra.”
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has postponed the hearing of all the nine cases scheduled to have been heard from Tuesday, 7 July 2020 to a yet-to-be-known date.
The postponement of all hearings follows the closure of all courts due to the fear of the outbreak of COVID-19.
Chief Justice Anin Yeboah had issued instructions to the courts to hear only cases that were of “extreme urgency”, as part of measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
He also stated that the courts must not willy-nilly remand accused persons.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, 21 April 2020, the Chief Justice said: “Judges and magistrates should only hear cases which are of extreme urgency” and “as far as possible, exercise great restraint in remanding accused persons in order to avoid overcrowding the prisons and police cells”.
The CJ added: “Judges and magistrates should dispense with the appearance of convicted and remand prisoners where possible”.
“In criminal appeals”, he noted, “the courts, where possible, should dispense with the appearance of the appellants who are in prison custody”.
