E/R: Afram Plains South faces critical health worker shortage, UNICEF promises support

The Kwahu Afram Plains South District in the Eastern Region is grappling with a major healthcare crisis due to a severe shortage of health personnel and inadequate medical logistics.
With just 14 midwives currently serving the district—far short of the required 40—health facilities are struggling to meet the needs of over 30,000 residents.
Speaking to the media, District Health Director, Mr. Kwadwo Owusu Ansah, revealed that the acute shortfall in midwives and other critical health staff is having a direct impact on the quality of care delivered in the district.
“We’re overwhelmed,” he said. “The few health workers we have are overstretched, and the lack of medical equipment and supplies only worsens the situation.”
According to Mr. Owusu Ansah, the poor road network and lack of decent accommodation for health professionals have made postings to the district unattractive, with many new staff refusing to accept placements.
“Without better living conditions and incentives, it’s difficult to attract and retain health workers,” he noted, appealing to government and partners for urgent intervention to ease the pressure on the existing workforce.
The health director made the remarks during a working visit by UNICEF Ghana Country Director, Mr. Osama Makkawi Khogali, who toured the district to assess the situation.
Mr. Khogali acknowledged the pressing challenges and pledged UNICEF’s support in addressing the gaps, particularly in improving children’s access to healthcare and education.
“UNICEF will collaborate with stakeholders to explore immediate and long-term solutions to improve healthcare delivery in Afram Plains South,” Mr. Khogali said.
The District Health Directorate is also calling for an upgrade of health infrastructure, improved logistics, and stronger support systems to ensure quality healthcare delivery in the rural district.
