Member of Parliament for Esikado Constituency in the Western Region, Dr. Grace Ayensu Danquah, has called on striking nurses to return to work as the government continues negotiations to address their concerns.

A medical doctor by profession, Dr. Ayensu acknowledged the legitimacy of the nurses’ grievances, particularly regarding their Conditions of Service.

While expressing solidarity with the nurses’ demands, Dr. Ayensu stressed the critical importance of maintaining healthcare services, noting that the absence of nurses severely hampers hospital operations.

“If the nurses are not in the hospital, the hospitals practically can't function,” she emphasised, underlining the indispensable role nurses play in delivering quality healthcare.

Her appeal comes at a time when the government, still in its early months in office, is grappling with multiple challenges in the health sector.

Dr. Ayensu urged the nurses to consider the broader implications of the strike, particularly its potential impact on patient care and lives.

The MP made this remark while speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday.

She also pointed to previous steps taken by the government to support health workers, including the payment of allowances, as evidence of a willingness to improve working conditions within the sector.

Dr. Ayensu called for a balanced approach, urging all stakeholders to work toward a lasting resolution that addresses the concerns of both nurses and doctors, while safeguarding the health and well-being of Ghanaians.
