The Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly in the Greater Accra Region (GAR) has commissioned a seven-member committee to steer the completion of an abandoned hospital at the Town Council Line in the Laterbiokoshie area of Accra.

The hospital project was started in 2007 by the then-National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma Central Constituency, Christian Tetteh Chai.

Mr Tetteh Chai started the project with his share of the allocations from the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). 

The seven-member committee has been given six weeks to submit its findings on the project which is about 95 per cent complete.

The project has travelled the tenure of three MPs namely Christian Tetteh Chai, Ebenezer Nartey and Abdul Lateef Dan.

A member of the committee and Assembly Member for Laterbikoshie Electoral Area, Muntari Wahab Awudu, told the host of the Ghana Yensom morning show on Accra 100.5 FM, Odehyeeba Kofi Essuman, that the Assembly has taken all the needed steps to have the project running for the good of the people in the area.

He said the committee's mandate was to own the project to see the development of the facility to ensure the delivery of healthcare in the area.

He said the Assembly through the municipal engineer and planning officers are working to complete the five per cent of works on the facility.

He added that one of the main problem is the lack of potable water even though a borehole has been dug - it is yet to be mechanised.

"The facility area is very dusty which is not conducive for a hospital," he stated.

According to him, the area has no single public health facility and this will be the only facility residents can fall on in time of distress if fully completed.

He said when a resident is sick, they have to be taken to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital to access healthcare.

The Acting Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Assembly, Mr Evans Amihere, for his part disclosed that there is no proper documentation on the project, hence, delays in the completion of the project.
