The Management of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in the Ashanti Region has firmly denied allegations circulating in sections of the media and on social platforms that the hospital detains patients who are unable to pay their medical bills after treatment.

In a press release issued on Monday, January 12, 2026, KATH management stated categorically that the hospital does not detain patients under any circumstances.

According to the statement, situations where some patients remain in the hospital beyond their official discharge dates are often misunderstood.

Management explained that such instances are usually due to financial constraints, particularly when patients or their families are unable to immediately settle outstanding medical bills accrued during treatment.

“These situations should therefore not be misconstrued as detention,” the statement emphasised.

KATH further noted that during such extended stays, the hospital continues to demonstrate its commitment to patient welfare by providing ongoing medical care, meals, and other basic support while appropriate arrangements are being made to resolve the financial challenges.

The hospital also acknowledged and expressed appreciation for the periodic support it receives from benevolent individuals, corporate bodies, faith-based organisations, and other groups, who assist affected patients by helping to settle their medical bills out of goodwill and compassion.

Management has therefore urged the media and the general public to exercise restraint and avoid publishing or sharing misleading information that could misrepresent the hospital’s operations and undermine public confidence in the institution.

KATH reaffirmed its dedication to delivering quality healthcare with compassion, professionalism, and respect for the rights and dignity of all patients.
