Rotational nurses and midwives cry out over 11 months of unpaid allowances

Rotational Nurses and Midwives across Ghana have voiced their frustration and hardship following 11 months of unpaid national service allowances.
Speaking in an interview with the Secretary of the Rotational Nurses and Midwives Association (RNMA), Mavis Akoto Frimpong, revealed that despite repeated engagements with the Ministry of Health and the previous government, the situation remains unresolved.
She made a passionate appeal to President John Dramani Mahama and the current Minister of Health to urgently intervene, describing the situation as dire and unsustainable.
“We have done everything necessary to get our allowances paid, but to no avail,” she lamented.
“For nearly a year, we’ve worked tirelessly in hospitals and health facilities across the country without any financial support. It’s unfair and discouraging.”
Mavis further appealed to stakeholders and relevant authorities to come to their aid, stressing that many of her colleagues are struggling to survive as they approach the end of their 12-month mandatory national service.
“Some of us are unable to afford transportation to work. We can’t feed ourselves properly, and sadly, even our parents have given up on us because they are overwhelmed,” she added.
The RNMA is calling for urgent attention to the matter, emphasising that the continued neglect of rotational nurses and midwives could demoralise future healthcare professionals and affect the quality of healthcare delivery across the country.
