Stranded patients at KATH as suspended CEO appeals for staff to end strike
Dr (Med) Paa Kwesi Baidoo, the suspended Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), has issued a direct appeal to striking hospital personnel to resume their duties immediately.
In a formal letter dispatched to all staff members on Monday, June 8, 2026, Dr Baidoo acknowledged the workforce's actions, writing, "I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all staff of the hospital for your show of solidarity with me during this period. I am very grateful for your support."
Origins of the Crisis
The ongoing industrial action is a direct response to a recent directive from the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, who instructed the KATH Board to place Dr Baidoo on a two-week suspension.
The disciplinary action was triggered by a dispute regarding the CEO's previous announcement that the facility would temporarily cease accepting new emergency admissions.
In a show of opposition to the ministry's decision, physicians and nursing staff at the major referral center have reportedly declined to admit or treat new patients.
Impact on Patient Care
The coordinated walkout has caused severe operational disruptions across the medical complex. Hundreds of individuals seeking medical attention have been left stranded at the hospital’s Out-Patient Department (OPD), with families and patients experiencing significant difficulties securing essential care.
Call for Postponement of Tensions
In his correspondence, the sidelined executive urged the healthcare workforce to prioritize public welfare over the ongoing leadership dispute while official channels review the situation.
"I need you all to return back to duty in the supreme interest of Ghanaians and our valued patients, whilst I defer the outcome and directions to the supreme wisdom of the Hon. Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh (MP), and the Board of KATH," Dr Baidoo stated.
Concluding his statement, Dr Baidoo emphasized his continued allegiance to the state administration and national leadership, affirming his alignment with the overarching vision of President John Dramani Mahama.
