International Nurses Day 2020

The government has said it appreciates the sacrifices and good works of nurses across country.

This was made known by Deputy Minister of Health Dr Bernard Oko-Boye on Tuesday, 12 May 2020 when he joined the Ghana Nursing and Midwifery Council to mark International Nurses Day.

He also commended the collective dedication and hard work of midwives and nurses in the country in ensuring the delivery of a healthy population for national development.

The day, which is celebrated around the world annually, on 12 May, recognises the contributions of nurses in society.

Ghana marked this year’s celebration under the theme: ‘Nursing the World to Health: Projecting the true value of Ghanaian Nurses and Midwives’.

The President of GRNMA, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo; and the Registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Felix Nyante, also joined members of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to observe the day.

Mr Nyante called for the harnessing of the collective strength of nurses to make a strong and impressive mark in healthcare delivery in current times.

The Dean of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Ghana, Legon, Prof Lydia Aziato, who delivered the keynote address, noted that the celebration should serve as a moment for stocktaking of nurses’ contribution to the delivery of healthcare.

She also commended GRNMA for their role in managing the spread of the deadly COVID-19 in the country.

The occasion was also used to launch the 60-year anniversary of the GRNMA.
