#2024Polls: One Dead, another injured in Awutu Senya East shooting incident
A tragic shooting incident in the Awutu Senya East Constituency of the Central Region has left one person dead and one other, critically injured during Ghana's December 7 general elections.
The victims, believed to be supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), were reportedly attacked by occupants of a V8 vehicle who opened fire as they were heading home after vote counting and collation exercises.
According to Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the NDC parliamentary candidate for the constituency, the incident occurred shortly after she had visited a collation centre in Iron City.
Speaking in an interview with Accra-based TV3, Ms. Okunor alleged that a V8 vehicle belonging to the incumbent Member of Parliament, Mavis Hawa Koomson of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was parked near the centre.
“They had followed me and shot one of my guys. One guy is dead, and it is not peaceful. There is a dead body lying down. Hawa Koomson has killed someone. She wanted to take my life and kill someone,” Ms. Okunor asserted.
When asked how she identified the vehicle and its occupants, she explained: “I know it because I know her car. I know the boys as well. This is not the first time the boys are coming to Kasoa. They were there in 2020 and were the first people who attacked me.”
The NDC candidate expressed grave concerns about her safety and that of her family, stating: “I am not safe right now. My life and my family’s lives are in danger.”
Ms. Okunor also claimed she had reported the incident to the Ghana Police Service but alleged no action had been taken so far.
The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that the victims were supporters of the NDC.
While investigations into the shooting are ongoing, this marks the second fatality in the 2024 elections.
A similar violent incident in the Tolon Constituency of the Northern Region also left one person dead, with four suspects arrested in connection with that case.
Awutu Senya East has long been considered an electoral hotspot, with repeated incidents of violence marring electoral activities in the constituency.
