The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Oforikrom Constituency of the Ashanti region has raised concerns about the abandoned Oforikrom Municipal Assembly office construction and the commencement of another similar office complex.

At a press conference on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 the Communication Bureau of the NDC in the Constituency urged the Special Prosecutor to swiftly investigate and take immediate action on the matter.

In 2021, Communications Officer Jerry James Sukah stated that the government began constructing the Assembly Office at Emena, with an estimated cost of GHS 2.5 million, expected to be completed within 12 months.

However, despite an expenditure of GHS 1.5 million on the project, it has been abandoned.

Instead, another similar office project estimated at GHS 3.5 million has begun at Oforikrom Girls' School, leaving the previous project unfinished.

Meanwhile, the Assembly continues to operate from a rented apartment, incurring exorbitant rental costs. Mr Sukah argued that the funds wasted on the abandoned project should have been used for other essential projects, such as the Anwomaso town road and Alonga town road, which would have had a significant social impact on the lives of the residents in the municipality.

Mr Sukah also cited previous examples of wasted resources by the Assembly, including the Bomso Durbar Ground, which cost GHS 3 million and was negligently constructed under a high-tension pole belonging to the Ghana Grid Company Limited.

This led to the demolition of the ground, causing financial loss to the state.

Therefore, he urged the Special Prosecutor to investigate the financial allocations made to these projects, as well as the financial loss caused to the state by the construction of the Bomso Durbar Ground.
