A/R: Offinso North DCE calls for calm over siting of 24-Hour Economy market
The Offinso North District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. Ceasar Ofosu Acheampong, has appealed for calm among residents—particularly the youth of Akumadan and Nkenkaaso—amid rising tensions over the choice of location for the government’s proposed 24-hour economy market in the district.
The announcement of a preferred site has sparked strong reactions, with competing agitations and counter-agitations emerging from the two communities.
Some natives of Akumadan and Nkenkaaso have expressed dissatisfaction, each group pushing for the project to be situated in their locality.
Addressing a news conference in Akumadan, Mr. Acheampong stressed that the decision to site the project at Nkenkaaso followed extensive consultations, rigorous technical assessments, and a carefully considered design process.
He noted that the move was aimed at ensuring fairness and delivering maximum benefit to all residents of Offinso North.
He urged the youth of both communities to exercise restraint, maintain peaceful coexistence, and support the Assembly to implement development projects smoothly.
Meanwhile, 32 Assembly members across the district—comprising elected representatives and government appointees—have strongly condemned what they describe as an act of betrayal by three Assembly Members who publicly opposed the choice of Nkenkaaso as the project site.
Speaking to journalists, Mr. Batholome Derry, Assembly Member for the Safokrom Electoral Area, said the action of the three individuals wrongly created the impression that the entire Assembly was against the siting of the project at Nkenkaaso. He reaffirmed that the overwhelming majority of Assembly Members support the decision.
The Assembly Members called for unity and urged residents to rally behind the project to advance the district’s development agenda.
