President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has described the late Kenneth David Kaunda as one of the icons of Africa’s independence movement.

Nana Akufo-Addo said these in a tribute to the First President of Zambia, Mr Kaunda who died on Thursday, 17 June 2021 at the age of 97.

“On behalf of the Government & people of Ghana & on my own behalf, I extend sincere condolences to the President, Government & people of Zambia on the loss of their first President & one of the icons of Africa’s independence movement, Kenneth David Kaunda. May his soul rest in perfect peace,” the Ghanaian leader said in a tweet.

Mr Kaunda served as the first President of Zambia from 1964 to 1991.

He was at the forefront of the struggle for independence from British rule.

Dissatisfied with Harry Nkumbula's leadership of the Northern Rhodesian African National Congress, he broke away and founded the Zambian African National Congress, later becoming the head of the United National Independence Party (UNIP).
