Ashanti NDC condemns renaming of Ameri Power Plant
The Ashanti Regional Communication Bureau of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly condemned the renaming and recommissioning of the Ameri Power Plant by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, labelling it as "shameful and disgraceful."
According to the Bureau, the NPP government had previously criticized the deal that facilitated the procurement of the Ameri Power Plant in 2015 under the leadership of former President John Mahama.
The purpose of acquiring the plant was to bolster the nation's generational capacity to address the challenges of power outages, commonly known as 'dumsor,' during that period.
During a press conference held in Kumasi Tuesday April 16,2024 the Regional Communications Officer, LawyerAbass Nurudeen, asserted that the former President has now been vindicated for his decision to procure the plant, which has since become crucial in addressing the power needs of the populace.
Mr. Nurudeen characterized the renaming of the plant as unnecessary and viewed it as an attempt to obscure the legacy of former President John Mahama.
The decision to rename the plant to Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant (KITPP) and recommission it in Kumasi, purportedly to alleviate dumsor, comes with a hefty price tag of $35 million, which Nurudeen deemed exorbitant.
In light of these developments, Mr Nurudeen urged the residents of the Ashanti region to acknowledge and credit former President John Mahama if the current power outages in the region are resolved through the recommissioned Ameri Power Plant, scheduled to take place in Kumasi Wednesday
