The ongoing Assin North by-election has been marred by allegations of vote buying, with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) being accused by the Minority Leader in Parliament, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

According to Dr. Forson, the NPP is distributing amounts ranging from GHS200 to GHS300 per person in an attempt to sway voters in favor of their candidate, Charles Opoku.

Addressing journalists in Assin North, Dr. Forson denied claims that he was involved in distributing money and accused the NPP of attempting to divert attention from their own actions.

He revealed that he had personally witnessed the distribution of money in ten different locations in Assin Bereku, the district capital, and called on the Ghana Police Service to address the issue.

Dr. Forson expressed his disapproval of such practices, referring to the amounts being given as despicable.

The Assin North by-election features three candidates competing for the vacant MP position: James Gyakye Quayson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Charles Opoku of the NPP, and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG).

The previous election held in 2020 was nullified by the Supreme Court due to Mr. Quayson's dual citizenship at the time of filing his nomination forms, leading to the court's instruction for his name to be removed from Parliament's records.

The Electoral Commission (EC) promptly scheduled the by-election for June 27 to fill the vacant parliamentary seat.
