Awutu Senya East NDC Chairman sparks fresh contest against MP

The Awutu Senya East Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Stephen Ofosu Agyare, has once again stirred the political waters by hinting at a possible contest against the sitting Member of Parliament, Miss Philis Naa Koryoo Okunnor, in the party’s upcoming parliamentary primary.

Speaking at a ward meeting in Opeikuma, Chairman Agyare emphasised that his decision stems from a desire to advance the constituency’s development agenda—particularly in areas of job creation and youth empowerment.

However, his declaration has rekindled long-standing tensions within the constituency’s leadership.

Some party loyalists view the move as a personal bid to unseat the incumbent MP, citing the frosty relationship between the two figures.

In the 2023 NDC parliamentary primary, Chairman Agyare notably threw his support behind another female contender, who was ultimately defeated by Naa Koryoo in a decisive victory.

Efforts by senior party figures—including President John Dramani Mahama—to mend relations between the two camps have so far yielded limited results.

While Chairman Agyare’s supporters have applauded his decision as a show of leadership and courage, sections of the grassroots fear the renewed rivalry could deepen divisions and jeopardise the party’s chances in future elections.

Political analysts observing the developments describe the chairman’s move as a potentially destabilising act, warning that internal discord could undermine the NDC’s unity and electoral strength in Awutu Senya East.
