C/R: NDC condemns violent clash between NPP factions in Agona West

Agona West’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) branch has expressed deep concern following a violent clash between supporters of two New Patriotic Party (NPP) factions, leaving multiple individuals injured, with at least one person in critical condition at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).
The confrontation involved supporters of Mr. Chris Arthur, the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, and the current Agona West Member of Parliament (MP), Cynthia Morrison who is running as an independent candidate.
A statement issued on Monday, 28 October 2024, signed by the NDC Communications Officer, Abdul-Wahab Africa Zion, described the incident as a "reckless display of aggression," noting that “such incidents have no place in our democracy, where every citizen should have the right to support their preferred candidates without fear of intimidation or harm.”
Eyewitness reports indicate that the clash escalated quickly, with gunfire erupting and leaving residents in shock and fear.
The NDC has called upon the Ghana Police Service and relevant authorities to conduct “a swift, impartial, and thorough investigation into this incident.”
The statement urged that “no individual, regardless of political affiliation, is above the law, and this violent act should not go unpunished.”
Furthermore, the NDC urged leaders of both factions, including Mr. Chris Arthur and the independent candidate, to publicly denounce the violence and commit to a peaceful campaign.
“Political leaders have a duty to ensure that their supporters are not incited to violence, and they must actively promote peace and tolerance throughout this election season,” the statement emphasised.
As Agona West prepares for the upcoming December 7 elections, the NDC called on residents to uphold values of “respect, unity, and tolerance.”
In its statement, the NDC reinforced its commitment to a peaceful electoral process, pledging to build “a community where everyone feels safe, regardless of political views,” and extended wishes for a swift recovery to those injured in the incident.
