Chereponi: NPP youth vandalise property over DCE nomination
Some angry youth of the governing New Patriotic Party at Chereponi in the North East Region on Sunday, 19 September 2021, went on the rampage and destroyed some property over the nomination of Zuwera Mada Nashiru as the District Chief Executive.
The youth preferred S. K. Orlando.
The timely intervention of the district police command de-escalated the tension.
The police said when they got wind of the disturbances, the command invited the Chereponi Constituency Chairman of the NPP, Mr Aliu Sulemana, and some of the youth leaders for an amicable solution.
The police said the youth promised to keep the peace and go by the Public Order Act and notify the police accordingly, should they intend to organise a demonstration.
Earlier, the NPP had urged its supporters, especially party executives at the grassroots level, to accept the list of MMDCEs in good fate.
“Every nominee on the list is selected by the President”, Director of Communications Yaw Buaben Asamoa said at a press conference on Friday, 17 September 2021, adding that “we expect the party grassroots executives to trust his judgement and support the approval process for these nominees."
“Of course”, he noted, “not everyone will have their preferred choice, however, we believe that as much as possible, every eligible candidate must have had a fair bite of the election process.”
