The National Chief Imam of Ghana, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has appealed to political leaders and stakeholders to prioritise peace as the December 7 general elections approach.

As tensions rise with the election season in full swing, Sheikh Sharubutu urged politicians to adopt a tone of civility and respect during their campaigns.

Speaking at a meeting with Muslim youth in Accra, the Chief Imam, through his spokesperson Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, underscored the responsibility of political leaders to safeguard national unity and stability during this crucial democratic exercise.

"Politicians, being at the forefront of the campaign season, are especially responsible for maintaining a tone of civility and respect in their utterances, as their words carry immense weight and influence," the Chief Imam stressed.

Sheikh Sharubutu also urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure transparency and accountability throughout the electoral process to preserve public trust.

“As citizens, we must keep the peace. He [Sheikh Sharubutu] calls on all stakeholders in our election processes... The EC must ensure transparency and accountability so we can have a credible election that will guarantee a credible result.”

The Chief Imam further called on political parties to be mindful of their words and avoid provocative statements that could fuel tensions.

 "He calls on the political parties to be cautious about the way they speak to their supporters, the vitriolics, the diatribes, and some of the fierce statements that we see being put out there," the spokesperson for the Chief Imam stated.
