Defamation: Yammin sues Ken Agyapong for GHS95m
A former Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Joseph Yammin, has sued Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong and his media house, Ken City, for GHS95 million in damages for defamation.
According to the plaintiff, the lawmaker used his media house to make utterances which portray him as a “wicked and criminal murderer” and has exposed him to public ridicule, hatred, and contempt in the eyes of right-thinking citizens of Ghana and numerous expatriates and diplomats in Ghana.
Mr Yammin has prayed the court to direct the defendant to retract the said publication three times a day for a year and to restrain the defendant from publishing further falsehood against him.
Merits of the case
According to Mr Yammin, on 14 May 2020, Mr Agyapong falsely accused him of conspiracy to commit series of murders and create instability in the country.
The plaintiff further averred that on 20 May 2020, Mr Agyapong, on Net2 TV, made further defamatory statements against him thus: ‘A villager; when he was at Prempeh College, he ate ‘sorpi’ food; when you see his cheeks – food. Have you seen that when he became a deputy Regional Minister, he felt being fat…like a castrated ram. This guy, he’s sitting there and misbehaving. The things he said are just anything. When you were at Prempeh College, what were you doing? You were eating ‘sorpi’. He rushes on food. That’s how he grew up and still rushes on things. Now, you said what? We’re monitoring you 24/7. You can go to hell, we’ll monitor. You said you’re tough, now you’re running.”
