EC sets September 2 for Akwatia by-election following MP’s death

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has announced Tuesday, September 2, 2025, as the date for the by-election in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region, following the sudden passing of the Member of Parliament, Mr. Ernest Kumi.
In a press release signed by Chairperson Jean Mensa, the Commission confirmed that the Akwatia parliamentary seat is now officially vacant in line with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution.
The by-election is being organised to fill the void left by the late MP.
The Commission has scheduled the filing of nominations from Monday, August 11, to Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at the Denkyembour District Office.
Submissions will be accepted between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm, and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on each day.
Interested candidates are required to download nomination forms from the EC’s official website (www.ec.gov.gh) starting July 30 through August 13.
Each form must be endorsed by two registered voters as proposer and seconder, along with 18 other registered voters from the constituency who support the nomination.
Candidates must submit:
Completed nomination forms in quadruplicate
Two recent passport-sized photographs with a red background
A filing fee of GHS 10,000.00
However, female candidates and persons with disabilities (PWDs) will pay a reduced fee of GHS 7,500.00.
According to the Commission, nomination forms can be submitted personally by the candidate or through the proposer or seconder to the Returning Officer at the designated district office.
The Electoral Commission has urged all stakeholders and the general public to take note of the timelines and procedures and ensure strict compliance.
