Former MP backs Dr. Bryan Acheampong for NPP flagbearer, calls for unity ahead of 2028 elections
A former Member of Parliament for Atwima Nwabiagya South, Mr. Emmanuel Adjei Anhwere, has appealed to delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to elect Dr. Bryan Acheampong as the party’s flagbearer in the upcoming presidential primary, describing him as the unifying figure the party urgently needs.
Speaking at a press conference organised by Dr. Acheampong’s campaign team in Kumasi, Mr. Anhwere said Dr. Acheampong possesses the moral authority and leadership qualities necessary to unite the various factions within the NPP after the primary.
He drew parallels to the experience of former President John Dramani Mahama, who, after losing heavily in the 2016 general elections, led the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to a comeback victory in 2024 through unity and reconciliation within the party.
Mr. Anhwere lamented the growing divisions in the NPP, particularly between supporters of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong, warning that such disunity has weakened the party’s front.
He stressed that Dr. Bryan Acheampong is the only candidate capable of restoring harmony and positioning the party strongly for victory in the 2028 general elections.
Addressing the same event, Mr. Eric Amoako Twum, spokesperson for Dr. Acheampong’s campaign, dismissed claims that “it is not Bryan’s time” or that he is “not ready” to lead the party, describing such assertions as “ridiculous.”
He maintained that, given Dr. Acheampong’s extensive credentials and experience, he is fully prepared to lead the NPP to success in 2028 if granted the mandate in the primary.
