GFL Secretary General urges trade union leaders to align with NDC's socialist ideology

Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has stated that serious trade union leaders should naturally align with political traditions that prioritise socialism and worker welfare, arguing that such ideology best protects the interests of labour.

Speaking on Ahotor FM on Saturday, Mr. Koomson asserted that labour movements around the world are historically rooted in socialist principles, making it logical for union leaders to support parties whose foundations emphasise social justice and the protection of workers.

He specifically pointed to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), describing it as ideologically socialist and more aligned with the goals of organised labour.

“Ideologically, the NDC is socialist, and any serious trade union leader will align with a political party that has socialism as its foundation. Even when they go off track, workers have the power to correct them and bring them back to the right direction,” he said.

While acknowledging that the NDC, like any political party, may face its own challenges, Mr. Koomson maintained that it remains the most reliable political tradition for workers in Ghana due to its pro-labour orientation.

He cautioned labour leaders against associating themselves with political actors who, in his view, do not genuinely prioritise worker welfare, stressing that some politicians are driven more by personal interests than by national development and social protection.

Mr. Koomson therefore urged labour unions to remain principled, united and strategic in their engagement with political parties, emphasising that their choices should always be guided by what advances the dignity, rights and economic security of workers.

“The labour movement must move with political forces that can genuinely help workers. We must be guided by principle, not convenience,” he added
