GFL boss warns Mahama’s exit in 2028 could trigger NDC power struggles

The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Mr Abraham Koomson, has cautioned that former President John Dramani Mahama’s decision not to contest the 2028 elections may destabilise both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Ghana’s political landscape.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show on Saturday, September 6, 2025, Mr. Koomson reiterated his long-held view that Mahama’s exit could create a leadership vacuum, sparking internal rivalries and divisions within the NDC.
“I still maintain that if President Mahama is going to go, then the Council of Elders of the NDC should sit down to pick the right person.
Some of us wouldn’t want a situation where President Mahama leaves the scene and then there are internal conflicts,” he said.
Mr. Koomson urged the NDC’s Council of Elders to take a proactive role in ensuring a smooth transition of leadership should Mahama stand by his decision to step aside.
He warned that without a clear succession plan, the party risks internal turmoil that could pave the way for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to return to power.
“The momentum the NDC has now could be lost if the party is thrown into confusion,” he stressed, adding that an NPP comeback could have serious consequences for ordinary Ghanaians.
According to him, Mahama’s continued leadership beyond 2028 would not only safeguard stability within the NDC but also help preserve Ghana’s broader political stability.
