Spokesperson for the Bawumia for President 2024 campaign, Mr Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has dismissed criticisms surrounding the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Executive Council (NEC) decision to hold an early congress to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on Accra-based Neat FM’s morning show, hosted by Mac-Jerry Osei Agyemang on Friday, June 20, 2025, Mr. Aboagye emphasised that the current political gap that needs to be filled is at the presidential level, not at the polling station level.

He was responding to claims that the party was moving prematurely with its internal processes, particularly because polling station executives have not yet been elected.

Mr. Aboagye clarified that the mandates of the current polling station executives remain valid, and therefore, there is no constitutional or operational need to replace them prematurely.

“Why force out polling station executives whose mandates haven’t expired?” he questioned, suggesting that critics are either uninformed or ignoring the party’s constitution.

He stressed that the real focus should be on filling the flagbearer slot for the upcoming elections.

“There is no gap in the polling station structures. The only gap is in the presidential primary,” he said.

Mr. Aboagye also revealed that the NEC’s decision to hold an early congress was overwhelmingly approved, with 98 percent endorsement at the Tuesday NEC meeting.

He dismissed the ongoing criticisms as “much ado about nothing,” stating that attempts to rally the party base have stalled due to entrenched personal interests over the flagbearership race of the party.

He added that once the presidential primary is concluded, party unity will be restored, and members will rally together in preparation for the 2028 general elections.

Mr. Aboagye reiterated that the early congress, proposed for December 2025, aligns with constitutional requirements, which stipulate that such a congress must be held at least six months before a general election.

He urged party members to focus on building unity rather than raising unnecessary alarm over a process firmly grounded in the party’s rules.
