Ghana card: NDC won’t allow EC to have its way – Elvis Afriyie Ankrah

The Director of Elections of the main opposition National Democratic Congress has warned it will not allow the Electoral Commission (EC) to have its way with the use of the Ghana Card as the only recognised document to be used as a form of identification for the upcoming voter registration exercise.
Mr Elvis Afriyie Ankrah said the NDC will not sit down for the EC to trample on Articles 42 and 45(e) that guarantee anybody who is 18 years and above to be registered to vote by the EC.
He said the party will not sit aloof for the Constitutional Instrument (C.I) 91 and 126 to be phased out for the new C.I. that purports to make the Ghana Card the sole breeder document for enrollment onto the voter’s register.
“As a party, we will not sit down for the EC to destroy our democracy. We all saw what they did in 2020 elections where some eight innocent people lost their lives,” he stated.
The former Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports under former president John Dramani Mahama speaking in an interview with the sit-in host of the Ghana Yensom morning show Odieshieba Kofi Essuman on Accra 100.5 FM on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, said the decision by the EC to phase out C.I. 91 and 126 has not been thoroughly discussed by all stakeholders in the country’s elections space.
He stated that the newly promulgated C.I. if admitted, will disenfranchise a lot of Ghanaians because the National Identification Authority has not been able to provide many with the Ghana Card.
The Director of Elections, on the show, added that the path on which the EC is threading will spell doom for the country
