Foreign Affairs Ministry nominee, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has expressed Ghana’s disappointment over the United States’ withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord. 

He described the decision as a setback to global efforts in combating climate change and called on the US to reconsider its stance.  

Speaking before the Appointments Committee on Friday, January 31, Mr Ablakwa highlighted Ghana’s active role in climate negotiations under former President John Dramani Mahama. 

“Let me register our unhappiness at the latest withdrawal by the United States of America from the Paris Climate Accord.

That was a very key intervention in the climate change agenda,” he stated.  

He further noted that the US withdrawal has disrupted international cooperation on climate action but reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to advocating for a stronger global approach. 

“Ghana played a leading role under former President Mahama when he was President at the time.

That has clearly created a disruption, but we will continue to urge our big brothers and sisters to come back to the climate change agenda,” he said.  

Mr Ablakwa emphasised the need for the international community to remain united in tackling climate change. 

He urged world leaders to commit to a new global order that prioritises climate action, ensuring a sustainable future for all nations.
