The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has announced that the government suspended the implementation of the proposed Energy Levy, citing global economic developments that could worsen living conditions for Ghanaians.

Addressing Parliament, Mr. Ayariga explained that while the levy was initially designed to take advantage of falling petroleum prices, changing global trends, particularly in oil markets, have created a risk of increased export costs that would directly affect citizens.

"The government is sensitive to the economic pressures facing Ghanaians," he said.

"Although the energy levy was meant to support the sector amid lower global oil prices, recent volatility in the international energy market has made it prudent to put the plan on hold."

Mr. Ayariga stressed that the suspension reflects the government’s continued commitment to protecting citizens from added financial burdens, especially during a period of economic recovery and uncertainty.

He further assured the public that the government will keep monitoring global and domestic economic indicators to determine the most appropriate course of action moving forward.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Energy is expected to appear before Parliament in the coming days to provide further details on the suspension, including its broader implications for the energy sector and government revenue.
