Greater Accra to enforce midnight curfew on minors – Regional Minister
The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mrs. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has announced that children under the age of 18 are prohibited from being outdoors after midnight, warning that offenders will be arrested and detained until their parents or guardians come for them.
Speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson on Accra 100.5 FM's Ghana Yensom morning show on Friday, December 19, the Regional Minister explained that the directive forms part of efforts to protect minors and curb rising incidents of crime, indiscipline and vulnerability involving young people during late-night hours.
According to Mrs Ocloo, security agencies have been instructed to enforce the measure strictly, especially in communities where minors are frequently found loitering on the streets after 12:00 a.m.
She stressed that the policy is not meant to punish children, but rather to safeguard them from potential harm and negative influences during that time of the day.
“Children have no business being outside at midnight. If they are found roaming at that time, they will be picked up and kept safely until their parents or guardians come for them,” she stated.
The Regional Minister further called on parents and guardians to take greater responsibility for the welfare and whereabouts of their children, urging them to ensure that minors are indoors and properly supervised at night.
She added that collaboration between families, community leaders and law enforcement agencies is key to ensuring the success of the initiative and promoting the safety and well-being of children across the Greater Accra Region.
