Kasoa-Winneba highway contract: Stop peddling falsehood, argue based on facts – Afenyo-Markin to Minority

Mr. Afenyo-Markin called for a more rational discourse in the lead-up to the election year

The Majority in Parliament has accused the Minority caucus of economic sabotage, alleging that their spread of misinformation is driving away investors.

This accusation comes amidst ongoing disputes over government adherence to financial regulations and contract approvals.

The Minority in Parliament has raised serious concerns about what they describe as the government’s blatant violation of the Public Financial Management Act.

They argue that the government failed to obtain Parliamentary approval for awarding the contract to dualise the Kasoa-Winneba section of the Accra-Cape Coast highway.

Speaking to journalists, Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson questioned the government's source of funding for the project.

In a rebuttal, the Majority dismissed these claims as misleading.

Addressing journalists in Parliament on Wednesday, 5 June 2024, the Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin defended the government's actions and criticized the Minority's approach.

“The contract in question must be an international transaction. That is where our colleagues should pay attention. It does not mean that every contract with a multi-year value should come to parliament. So they should stop misleading the public. They should stop peddling falsehoods. Every government engages the private sector. The object of that is to create space for economic growth,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin stated.

He further accused the Minority of recklessly scaring off businessmen, thereby attempting to sabotage the economy.

“So if you recklessly scare off the businessmen and where you know that what you are putting out is not true, what you are trying to do is to sabotage the economy,” he added.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin called for a more rational discourse in the lead-up to the election year.

“So I would want to encourage them that we know it’s an election year, but let’s argue on facts. Let’s put out the facts,” he emphasised.

He also urged the business community to desist from hoarding dollars, assuring that the government is working to ensure the stability of the cedi.
