Mahama Ayariga: I was approached to be Majority Leader while in opposition

Bawku Central Member of Parliament and newly appointed Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has disclosed that discussions about his leadership of the majority caucus began even before the 2024 general elections.
Ayariga revealed that he was approached to take up the role while still serving as a leading figure in the then-minority caucus, actively opposing the Akufo-Addo administration.
“To tell you the truth, towards the end, there were approaches made to me to consider leading the majority caucus after the 2024 general elections. [This was] before the elections,” Ayariga disclosed.
His appointment as Majority Leader was officially announced on January 23, 2025, following the National Democratic Congress' (NDC) victory in the general elections.
He succeeds Cassiel Ato Forson, who has transitioned into his new role as Minister of Finance.
Ayariga’s elevation to Majority Leader is seen as a strategic decision by the NDC, leveraging his experience, negotiation skills, and parliamentary expertise to steer the party’s legislative agenda in the new parliamentary session.
His leadership is expected to play a crucial role in shaping parliamentary proceedings and advancing the governing party’s policies.
He made this revelation while speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV.
